CYE Summer Camp 2022 Italy

CYE Summer Camp 2022 Italy

Hello everybody!

With great sadness, we have no choice but to cancel the Summer Camp in Italy.

In these last months, we have tried our best to organize a successful event, after the difficult summers that we have all experienced in 2020 and 2021. However, the persisting uncertainties related to the Covid-19 framework and the emerging ones deriving from the geopolitical tensions that Europe is suddenly and unexpectedly experiencing have convinced us about the impossibility to organize a funny and playful event, to be enjoyed by participants from the whole continent.

Consequently, we have informed the CYE about our choice not to hold the summer camp in Italy, neither in 2022 nor in the upcoming years.

We truly hope to see you in 2023, having fun (and gluten free food) together somewhere around Europe!

GA meeting 2021

GA meeting 2021

This year’s GA meeting was held online. During this meeting 15 delegates discussed plans for the coming year, came up with ideas for social media and we discussed the coming CYE Summer Camp in 2022 and 2023. We have got many things in store for you this year, so stay tuned.

Hopefully next year we will be able to meet each other in real life again!

If you are interested in reading the complete minutes, you can find them here.

Travel Net updated

Travel Net updated

As the Summer season is coming up, we are all hoping that this year we will get the chance to travel abroad again, obviously if we can do so safely under the current circumstances.

That’s why the past months CYE has been working really hard to update all Travel Net pages. We have not only been able to update almost all pages, we have also added a few new pages in collaboration with our new delegates and their corresponding coeliac associations, such as Andorra, Belarus and Cyprus. We are still working with the other associations to update and add a few more pages, which we hope to accomplish in the coming weeks.

Go to our Travel Net page to find all this newly updated information.

We hope you have a great summer!

International coeliac day 2021

International coeliac day 2021

Since many years members of the Association of European Coeliac Societies (AOECS) recognise 16th May as International Coeliac Day.

In many regions of the World coeliac organisations unite their forces around this day to share stories, activities and tools about how is like living with coeliac disease and help raise awareness on what it takes to live gluten-free.

This year, in Australia, Canada, New Zeeland and USA, many organizations join forces in the #shineAlightOnCoeliac campaign. You will be delighted to learn some illuminating facts and stories at their website: #shineAlightOnCeliac.

In Europe, the Association of European Coeliac Societies (AOECS) wants to pay tribute to all women who:

  • are coeliac themselves – girls and women are twice as many as men diagnosed at any age
  • have a coeliac relative – children or adult family members – as housewives are responsible for caring for the family, following the strict and lifelong gluten-free diet, provide care and support
  • even actively participate as passionate members and volunteers of the coeliac patients support groups and associations locally, national or global level
  • as a committed healthcare professional, as a dietitian who informs, educates, follows from the first moments, just after the proper diagnosis, and supports celiac families in learning and maintain modern, nutritious, and sustainable kitchens at home.

AOECS also will use the Social Media Channels to share also facts about coeliac symptoms in girls and women.

Naturally, we never forget: coeliac disease is a lifelong chronic condition of all ages, and in Europe the ratio of diagnosed cases does not exceed 1 : 7-8.

Last but not least, we invite everyone for our open webinar on the 19th May, about “Women and coeliac: unveiling the role of women”.

About the disease:

Coeliac disease affects 1-2 in 100 genetically predisposed individuals who develop a small intestinal inflammation (enteropathy) on exposure to dietary gluten. (Gluten is the storage protein of wheat, rye and barley and widely used by the food industry). Symptoms can include bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, tiredness, anaemia, headaches, mouth ulcers, recurrent miscarriages, weight loss (but not in all cases), skin problems, depression, joint or bone pain and nerve problems. The disease can be diagnosed at any age, even without symptoms, as a result of family screening.

The only treatment of coeliac disease is the life-long and strict avoidance of ingestion of gluten.

About AOECS:

Association of European Coeliac Societies (AOECS) was founded in 1988. Is an independent, non-profit organization, currently 26 enrolled member societies across Europe, representing people who are effected by coeliac disease or dermatitis herpetiformis and seeks to collaborate with international coeliac organizations worldwide.

Nowadays, COVID-19 infection is the most important health problem due to the global pandemic situation and the absence of effective treatments for the disease. Once infection occurs, the evolution of it in each person is unpredictable and the complications can be very harmful, even result in a potential death.

Until now, the only measures to prevent infection have been social distancing, hand hygiene and protection with masks. Nevertheless, after an unprecedented scientific effort, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has recently approved the first vaccines for immunisation in the European Union: the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, Comirnaty® or CBNT162b2; the Moderna® or mRNA-1273 vaccine; the Oxford/AstraZeneca® or ChAdOx1n-CoV-9 vaccine; and the recently licensed Janssen vaccine. Many others are in development and soon to be marketed.

Vaccination is an excellent measure to achieve individual immunity and contribute to herd immunity in the medium term, which is what will ultimately control the pandemic. Clinical trials have been done in healthy volunteers and not in patients with coeliac disease, but, considering the potential severity of COVID-19 infection, the general recommendation for coeliac patients is to take the vaccine when it is offered, unless they have a specific reason to not be vaccinated. As so far, at present, there is no evidence to indicate that coeliac patients are at a higher risk of developing adverse effects.

In fact, in recent days, there have been many scientific societies that support vaccination in these and other patients, as can be seen in the document published by the Spanish Society of Digestive Pathology (Sociedad Española de Patología Digestiva). In this regard, the Spanish Society of Digestive Pathology states that: “Generally speaking, and in view of the scientific evidence available at the present time (December 2020), vaccination is preferable to non-vaccination in all people, with or without digestive diseases”. This is also supported by the recommendations published by the European Society for the Study of Celiac Disease (ESsCD) and the American Society for the Study of Celiac Disease (SSCD).

The only contraindication to the vaccine is allergy to the active ingredient or to any of its components, which can be consulted in the package leaflet available on the website of the Spanish Medicines Agency (AEMPS). It ought to be borne in mind that celiac disease is not an allergy and, in itself, does not require any additional precautions when administering the vaccine. Of course, patients with concerns about the vaccine and their particular circumstances should consult their general practitioner. Finally, it should be noted that the mechanism of each vaccine is different. For further information regarding the vaccines, please consult the European Medicines Agency (EMA) latest information at  https://www.ema.europa.eu/en/human-regulatory/overview/public-health-threats/coronavirus-disease-covid-19/treatments-vaccines/covid-19-vaccines.

Summer camp 2021 cancelled

Summer camp 2021 cancelled

Hello gorgeous people all over the world.

Over a year has passed since the beginning of this pandemic.

During this time we had no choice but to adapt to the situation and to change our habits and behaviour. That is definitely not easy for anyone.
Since last year, We kept hoping: hoping that the whole situation would go better, hoping that the number of the infected would decrease, hoping for an earlier arrival of a Covid-19 vaccine.

The pandemic surely took some serious steps in a positive way, but, sadly, this whole situation is incompatible with some kind of things, such as young coeliacs coming from all over Europe and having some fun all together.

With immense sadness, but full of hope, We announce that for the second time the CYE Italian Summer Camp 2021 is officially cancelled.

Hoping to be able to hug and see each other again as soon as possible, We deeply thank you for your patience, hoping that you can understand.

Stay safe people, one day we will meet all together again. And it will be majestic.

HELLO AND SEE YOU SOON! STAY STRONG!

CYE Summer Camp update!

CYE Summer Camp update!

Hello there young people😁

Hope that you’re doing great and that the planning of your Christmas holidays are looking promising 🎅🎄.As you might have seen, we haven’t been posting a lot in the past few weeks. Considering the whole situation in which our world is currently in, unfortunately nothing is certain. Most of us don’t even know if we will be able to spend Christmas with our dear relatives. At the moment it’s hard for us to be sure whether the Summer Camp will take place or not.

So despite our willing to communicate to you all the activities that we’re planning and our deep desire to have all of you in Italy, We just didn’t want to disappoint your expectation once again. We didn’t want to pretend it’s all going as planned and it will surely happen. We just wanted to be sure you’re ok and you still have that willing to have fun to bring to the Summer Camp, like we always do every year.

Take care guys, stay safe. Hoping to see all of you this summer,

We wish you the best Christmas Holidays! 🦌🎅CIAO! 👋🤞😉

EPF Webinar

EPF Webinar

In the past 18 of november, the CYE board was present on the European Patients Forum (EPF) Youth Group Work and Youth Strategy (WAYS) launch webinar.

The EPF Youth Group is made up of young patient representatives between 15-29 years old. They all have different chronic conditions and they come from all over the EU.

The aim of the EPF Youth Group is to become the reference group of the young patient community and its role is to communicate the needs and expectations of young patients to EPF and its members.

This way, the WAYS webinar focused on how challenging it can be for finding employment for any young person, even more so if they live with a chronic condition. This way, an online survey was launched and some of the results were: 44% of those interviewed felt that finding a job was ‘Difficult’ or ‘Very Difficult’ and 81% of respondents were not aware of employment support registries available in their country of residence.
