Coeliac Disease is very well known in Sweden, but often more commonly known as gluten-intolerance. Most people know the basics of the condition but when it comes to contamination and how a person with coeliac disease can be affected if they eat even the smallest amount of gluten there is still much to be learned. Therefore, it is important to explain your needs clearly when visiting a restaurant or a hotel.

Where to buy gluten-free food in Sweden

Gluten-free food can be bought in all the major grocery stores (ICA, COOP, Willy’s etc.).

In most of the stores there is a special section marked with “glutenfritt” for the gluten free products. Often there is also a freezer designated for gluten-free products in the freezer section of the store. The gluten-free products are usually marked with a crossed grain symbol, but if not they could also be marked with “fri från gluten”. The selection of gluten-free products is generally very good and is getting better all the time. You can find everything from pasta and bread to flour-mixes and pizzas.

Gluten-free hotels in Sweden

In Sweden coeliac disease, more commonly known as “gluten-intolerance”, is very well known and almost every hotel in Sweden provides some sort of gluten free breakfast. It would be unusual if a hotel could not serve it. However, if in doubt about whether the hotel you want to stay at provides it we recommend you to call ahead and ask.
